Ninja Shark Mask review

Ninja Shark Mask Review

Back in February of this year 2020, I wrote a blog review on the Full Face Snorkel that the kids received for Xmas.

That was our first experience using the Full Face Snorkels and we were blown away.

So many times, prior to getting these masks, we had gone snorkelling, or had the intentions of going snorkelling, for it only to become a frustrating and a non-enjoyable experience.

In that Full Face Mask Review I stumbled across Ninja Shark and the Ninja Shark Full Face mask. The design of their mask had different feature and as I did more research it became apparent to me that Ninja Shark where continually improving their mask, using the feed back they got from their customers.

I said then that I would be looking at getting one in the future, that time has come. The Ninja Shark Full Face Snorkel is leaps and bounds ahead of the other masks the kids got last X-mas, and they continue to want to improve the product and user experience.

In this Ninja Shark Full Face Snorkel Review I share with you my experience, what my kids think of the mask and why these should be on your shopping list.

This review is on the Ninja Shark Air Mask for Adults and Kids, not the Ninja Shark Equalizing Mask.

How the Full Face Snorkel Mask Works

With the other products, air is breathed in through the breathing tube and exhaled also through the breathing tube. This was causing some people to find it harder to breath and some of the CO2 was getting mixed with the fresh air being breathed in.

This is where a lot of the bad publicity came from regarding the full face mask.

With the Ninja Shark snorkel the clean air is breathed in through the breathing tube and is expelled out through the sides of the mask.

This eliminates any of the expelled CO2 from mixing with the fresh air. The expelled air is pushed out of the valves either side of the mouth, so no expelled air is mixed with the fresh inhaled air.

This is a huge improvement to the mask allows you to enjoy the snorkelling experience worry free.

Are full face snorkel masks used for free diving?

In short, they are not.

The mask that we have is the Ninja Shark Air Adults/Kids Mask and is not designed for free diving. It is designed for surface snorkelling; however, you can go down to around 1 – 2 meters with them and they have the ball valve at the top of the breathing tube that prevents water from entering.

This means you do not have to do the big blow out when you surface to clear the water from the breathing tube.

Ninja Shark do however have a relatively new mask called the Equalizer Mask, this has been designed with a rubber nose section that you are able to pinch your nose so that you can equalise the pressure which allows you to dive deeper than the Air Mask does.

The Ninja Shark Equalising Mask is not designed to for traditional free diving where people dive as deep as possible in one breath of air.

There are special masks and fins designed for this and free diving is really a separate sport or activity to snorkelling.

If you are looking at wanting to go deeper when snorkelling, then you will need to check out the Ninja Shark Dry Snorkel Set. This is also available in the package.

How to use the Full Face Snorkel Mask

The mask is easy to use. Depending one what style you get, it can come with the breathing tube attached and hinged so it can be folder down for storage. Or you will have the breathing tube separate where it easily clips in and out so it can be stored easily when not in use.

Either way, once you have the mask and breathing tube set up, you simply slip the mask onto your head and adjust the straps to tighten the mask comfortably against your face.

I found the best way to breath in the mask is to breath normally and not too faster.

How to put on your Ninja Shark Fins

If you buy or have bought one of the Ninja Shark packages, then you will or would have received fins in the package.

The fins are a great addition and just make moving through the water that much easier. You will find that you are able to cover more area and with less effort, allowing you to stay in the water longer.

The fins have adjustable straps so they can accommodate different sized feet so, particularly the growing kids, will not grow out of them like they do their school shoes.

So, you simply slip the fins on, tighten the strap and off you go.

How do you measure your face for the Full Face Mask?

You simply measure from the bridge of your nose down to your chin.

Ninja Shark Measurement Chart

  • Step 1 – With your mouth closed, measure from the bridge of your nose to the bottom of your chin. (Important – measure in a straight line and not over your nose)
  • Step 2 – If the measurement is less than 12cm (4.8In), choose S/M size.
  • Step 3 – If the measurement is greater than 12cm (4.8in), choose L/XL size. (Note – They do have also the 2 x masks for kids (XS) (3-11 years old). The measurement is less than 3.9In (10cm).

Are Full Face Snorkel Mask safe to use?

As previously mentioned, there is some negative press around the dangers of the Full Face Snorkel Masks and the dangers associated with them.

There where reports of full face snorkel mask deaths while using the product.

The main concern was the mixing of the CO2 that can occur when snorkelling.

Ninja Shark have taken this seriously and put the user’s safety at the forefront. They continue listen to feed back and improve their products.

Some of the improvements they have made to the full face mask is wider tube, separate breathing channels for inhaling and exhaling, extra exhaling channel, extra uni-directional valves and longer tubes.

This is part of the ongoing improvement Ninja Shark Australia continue to strive for with their products and the reason why you need to be mindful when looking at which mask to buy.

This is why Ninja Shark Australia have produced one of the safest full face snorkel masks in 2020 and beyond.

Ninja Shark have written a good article about this and address some of the questions around the safety, dangers of the CO2 and why the Ninja Shark Masks are safe to use.

Are full face snorkel masks better?

When you are looking at surface snorkelling then the fill face snorkel mask is better than the traditional snorkels as they are a lot easier to use, you don’t have the mouth piece in your mouth and the straps don’t dig into your head or pull your hair like the traditional masks.

If you are looking to dive deep, then the Ninja Air Masks are not better than the traditional snorkels where they allow you to dive deeper. This can be solved by getting the Equaliser Mask that is available.

What my 12 year old daughter Marli thinks

Ninja Shark Kids Mask

Marli finding her ear ring

“The full-face snorkel masks by Ninja Shark work like a dream

I was out at Great Keppel Island once with my family and as I was putting my mask on, one of my earrings fell out into the water. With the snorkel, I was able to quickly slip it on, dive into the water and search for my earring. Luckily the clear screen made finding my jewellery super easy. Without the mask I would not have been able to find it.

It made it so much more trouble-free and I’m very grateful to have had it with me at the time. The mask is nice and clear to see through and great for looking at reefs along with the Ninja Shark flippers. Speaking of which, they make snorkelling a piece of cake and with them, you can glide through the water care-free.

I would definitely recommend Ninja Shark products like these because of the amazing quality and range of activities you can do with them. On their website, they have a variety of options to choose from and I can guarantee you will love them.”
